We here at the blender are big fans of David Reynolds so we decided to get him on the show on his way back to Ketchikan after his first Alaskan Tour. We weren’t able to pin him for a talk on first pass through town, but at the time we were able to catch several of his Anchorage live shows. I had to ditch out early from the McGinley’s show for hockey, but those of you who missed them have no excuse. Well, aside from that whole absolute lack of advertising thing, but that’s weak…

He’s got a fantastic album out and should be recording another one in the coming months. Check out his unreleased material on the podcast and buy one of his CDs to appease the guilt of missing him both times he was in town.

This week Loren and Paul from Necrotic Opus stopped by. During the show we talked about all things illegal… and some things that probably should be. Clay talks about making napalm while Jeff and Marc talk about sharing a jail cell. Loren and Paul are right in there with a few stories of their own. Hopefully the statute of limitations have all run out. Fingers crossed.

Back in the saddle

As our devoted fan could tell, we took a small hiatus late last year as bands started to hit the studios to record and life generally crept up and kicked us in the beans. It took us a bit to get our shit sorted and cobwebs dusted off, but we’re back. Crammed into my new, spacious, box-filled (read: holy fuck you moved in five months ago do something with these god damn boxes!) man cave for some booze addled fun. Step right up and enjoy!

Oh yeah, I uploaded this show late Sunday night before bed and forgot to actually write the post for it until now. Holy ass, I’m stupid.

Hey folks,

I know it’s been a while since we’ve done a show. We are contacting bands and trying to set up dates to get them on the show. Most bands are lining up shows for the summer season and playing a lot so we get put on the back burner. We will hopefully get going again really soon.

In other news, The Scurvies are going to be playing the Cretin Punk Fest in Seattle in late June. So all of our Seattle friends should go check out this hard-rockin’ band. I think these guys are on the road more than they are at home.

I think that’s it for now. Keep your ears open for us and let us know if there is a band we should be paying attention to.

We just wanted to make a quick post letting everyone know what’s going on with the Rude Blender crew.

As you all are aware, the holiday season is in full swing. And, just like you, we are busy as hell. (Which is the reason for the lack of shows recently.) Not only with the usual family stuff but also with lining up more awesome guests.

Chevy Chase & The Return of the Jeff

This week’s show heralds the return of Jeff after two weeks of Las Vegas drunken debauchery. Also our good friend Steven (aka Contact) stopped by with a seemingly shy, and frankly rather emaciated, homeless person to discuss his new hardcore project Chevy Chase. Thus far they have some of the best song titles ever.

For the anime fans out there, show friend Mercedes stops by to talk about AuroraCon 2008. Sadly the event won’t be featuring any local bands, but I’m pleased to see there are a few cute female voice actors scheduled to attend. Oh yeah, and zombies!

Don’t Eat Pants! – An Evening at Velg’s

For this show Rude Blender Radio (sans Jeff) packed up and headed over to Velg’s place to do the show fireside on the patio. Plenty of good friends attended and plenty of good drinks were served. Live music was provided by the always popular Kara Karels who premiered a new song for us, as promised, and we discuss the details of her upcoming debut album.

This is actually the second take of the show as some cords got snagged and we ended up losing the first take. If you were there you’ll be able to tell that people are noticably more drunk which always makes things more interesting. Regardless, the outdoor show was such a blast we should have charged for admission.

Podcast 8 – Putting the SKA in AlaSKA

Scott “SKA-T” Emery and “Like a Chocoholic, but with booze” Justin Somaduroff of the godfathers of local music, Nervis Rex, stopped by to put the ‘rude’ in Rude Blender Radio. Regulars of more venues that I care to list (hail be to Humpy’s), this venerable act has been at it for over a decade bringing the best ska wherever they go. We discuss the past, present and future of the band as well as the multitude of highly talented musicians that have come and gone. Interestingly the band appreciates the dynamic shift that new members bring to the show and are open to the possibility of adding new members as others move on. If you’re a local musician who, ya know, doesn’t want to get a real job, give this show a listen; you may very well have a shot at being part of the local music legend.

We also wanted to send out a special congratulations to Don Cosgrove who wasn’t able to make it into the studio due to the birth of his daughter the previous day. You rock, Don!

Podcast 7: The Most Giganticus Podcast Ever!

Those people who wrote in to let us know how much they were anticipating the Vicious Regress show might be a little disappointed; they weren’t able to make it. Yet worry not! We were able to score an in-studio live show from Matt and Evan (aka +Church+) of Mose Giganticus and The Emotron as they concluded their US/Canada tour. We recorded two songs from each act and then sat down for a lengthy chat all fueled by a healthy dose of warm beer and cold taco bell.

We realize that these guys aren’t from AK and we discussed the reasoning behind featuring them on a local music show. When you hear what they had to go through to get here to play for everyone, you’ll understand why we had to get them on the show.

The four tracks we recorded have been made into a live split for us by Brett of Rune Fire Records. There’s a slim possibility that we might make up a few copies as donation-optional giveaways to help the guys get back home. If you’re interested, let us know in the comments.

Technical difficulties

We went a little long with this week’s show which is making dumping the audio from our mixer kind of a pain in the ass. We’ve pretty much gotten all of the bugs worked out, but it’s put us a few days behind schedule. We’ll get the audio ready for the series of tubes and posted as soon as possible. Podcast 6: Frolicking Through The Shrubberies… Core!

The first show posted in our new one-off schedule has us skipping through the tundra with two members of one of Anchorage’s most beloved metal bands; Chased Through The Woods. Compared to a lot of other bands in the state, these guys keep an extremely rigorous show schedule making regular appearances at venues in the valley, The Paddleboat Cafe and their recent Club Millennium Downstairs debut at the Metalfest.

We would also like to congratulate Kara, whose appearance here has quickly become the highest rated show yet!

A few changes

Since the three of us have real jobs, we are working on the record/release schedule.

Mainly, Clay is our tech guy. He’s the one who cleans up the show before we release it. Prepping the show consisted of getting the show from Jeff some time on Sunday and working like a dog to try and get it sorted by Tuesday.

Starting this week, we’re going to release the show every Friday. This eases the workload on Clay and ensures a bit of consistency on our part.

That out of the way, in the coming weeks we’ll have Vicious Regress, Nervis Rex, The Jeffries, and Mangrobang

This week we had in-studio Brett from RuneFire Records and his bandmates Tyler and Jeremy from Bound By Entrails. Unfortunately the guys won’t be making the Kincaid Metalfest on June 14, but we discuss some great things coming up for the band including plans for a new tour and songs for an upcoming album.

Next week will be a change of pace as we welcome Kara to the show. She’s opened for the likes of Bound By Entrails, and Chased Through The Woods which has earned her the nickname ‘the calm before the storm’. Her soft chords, deep sound and hypnotic voice has won her a legion of fans (which most definitely includes the punks and metal heads behind this show). If you haven’t heard her music you owe it to yourself to tune in next week and check it out.

Portugal. The Man returns to Alaska, June 27 & 28

Portugal. The Man is returning to Alaska! The indie four-piece from right here in AK is back for a handful of performances after a lengthy European tour. They’re scheduled for an acoustic set at Humpy’s on June 26 followed by two shows at Club Millennium on the 27 and 28. Show up to support your local boys including opening performances by The Hoons (June 27), Strept (June 28) and Lavoy (June 28).

This week Spenser and Chris from Korupture stopped by for a chat. We demo a few tracks from their new album ‘The Book of Time’. Lead vocals Scott couldn’t make it, but we had a fuckin’ blast. For anyone who isn’t familiar with Korupture or hasn’t heard anything from their new album, you owe it to yourself to give it a listen. Even if you don’t consider yourself a metal fan. This will change your whole world. Check it out!

On a side note I’m working on getting the file sizes of our shows down. I should be able to cut the download size in half and save everyone involved some time. Sizes should come down sometime this week when I can get everything re-encoded.

Downtime is fuckin’ metal!

Quite a few people asked about the site on Monday so here’s an explanation of what went on. From the looks of things Dreamhost finally got around to replacing an old, worn out server being used to store a bunch of sites. That didn’t go as planned and the machine died in the process. Good thing we were on that server so we could get in on that sweet downtime. That problem was actually fixed pretty quickly, but some genius moved our database onto a new and quite mis-configured mysql server. A quick email to tech support and everything is back to normal.

Three years hosting with Dreamhost and one day of downtime… I can live with that.

I’m gonna be working late so the new podcast will be up later tonight.

Podcast 2: The Revenge

Due to a conflict with things that are, quite frankly, far more important than we are, our previously scheduled guest had to cancel. Many thanks to Contact for stepping up and being the first in-studio musician to be featured on Rude Blender Radio. It was awesome to finally meet him and hear a few more of his tracks.

Somewhere on this site I’ll have to throw up that disclaimer that says something to the effect of guests of Rude Blender Radio are completely unmoderated and uncensored. If something is said that offends you, you are more than welcome to request a full refund. Oh, right… we’re doing this for free. If you don’t like local music and the wide array of individual personalities that go along with it, feel free to stop listening (and save me the bandwidth). Otherwise go forth and consume!

Stayin’ Out Late & Goin’ To Shows

So last night was the dual CD release party for Strept and Korupture. I figured it would be the perfect chance to talk to some band guys about doing our little music show. Clay and I went do to the show, not really sure about what to expect. When we walked in, a band called The Scurvies was playing. Clay and I were pretty impressed with them. To us, it was a surf-punk meets hardcore sound. We only caught the last 2 or 3 songs but we really liked them.

Next up was Strept. If I remember right, Strept has been around for a while. I do remember seeing one of their early shows and not really caring for it. The band I saw last night was light years past that. Their timing was on, everything sounded great… except for the few problems with the mic. I think the cord kept coming loose. They have a sound, that while reminiscent of other bands, is their own… and it is good. Overall, a really good performance.

Then… Came… Korupture!! While I have tried to get to a couple of their shows, I have always failed. So the very aggressive way the band tried to blow my eardrums was something I wasn’t quite prepared for. Scott, who reminds me of Phil Lynott, started with some high-pitched screaming only to drop into guttural singing and then went right back to the screaming. My eardrums were confused and the only thing they could think to do was hurt. Just before they played, I realized that one of the guitar players was Skwisgar Skwigelf from Metalocalypse… I think. <– I’m kidding… but he could play really fast. They have a crazy, frenetic pace that dominated the audience. And the crowd loves “Destructor”. Korupture as a band was something I wasn’t expecting but was very glad I heard.

Although next time…. I’m bringing ear plugs.

Rude Blender Radio is on the air

This here is the inaugural edition of Rude Blender Radio. We spent more time trying to figure out how we were going to accomplish this recording than we spent actually figuring out what we were going to discuss. We managed to get everything done with materials we had on hand… and by we I mean Jeff. Our intention is to get musicians in-studio for discussions, but this came together so quickly we weren’t able to secure a guest.
